Math
Multisensory Math Level 1
Based on the Orton-Gillingham philosophy of teaching, Marilyn Zecher’s Multisensory Mathematics I applies the research-based Concrete-Representation-Abstract (CRA) approach to teaching mathematics as advocated by the National Math Panel and the NCTM. Participants learn to apply this methodology in guiding students from foundation skills and numeracy to place value, operations, fractions and decimals. Participants learn to use manipulatives effectively to reinforce concepts, aid memory and enhance performance for all students. Strategies for helping students learn and retrieve math facts are stressed as well as structured procedures for computational accuracy. This approach is especially effective with students who learn differently, inclusion classes and ESL learners. The approach is effective for initial instruction as well as remedial work at all levels and is compatible with all curricula and programs.

M’s of Math: Metacognition, Morphology, and Mastery
Reading instruction shouldn’t end when the period ends, especially for our students who struggle to develop decoding and comprehension skills that are required in all content areas. During this workshop, participants will learn how to apply findings from the science of reading in their math instruction. In real life, math isn’t a worksheet full of equations, it involves language proficiency. Many students, not just those with specific learning disabilities, struggle with the language of math and often end up developing anxiety rather than developing confidence. Participants will learn how to bridge their reading instruction into math class by providing targeted fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction. The session will begin with an overview of universal math screeners, such as Acadience and AimswebPlus, in order to learn how to measure students’ acquisition of foundational math skills. Participants will leave the workshop with strategies and resources they can immediately incorporate into their math lessons with their dyslexic students.
