Structured Literacy

Early RIISE
This half-day workshop, now offered virtually, will inform early childhood educators about the latest research findings and best practices in early childhood literacy and numeracy. Participants will learn about the latest Early Literacy and Math Screening tools designed to measure early literacy and math foundational skills. Persistent myths about what and how to teach our youngest students will be busted! Participants will practice with some of the newest Screeners, and then discuss how the results of such screeners can lead to targeted instruction for kids in need. Activities that specifically address phonological awareness and numeracy will be shared and practiced with participants. Finally, participants will be provided with an overview of the latest early childhood math/literacy curriculums developed to explicitly teach foundational literacy/numeracy skills.
$50 per person
Structured Literacy Lessons in a Virtual Classroom
The workshop was developed knowing that many educators and their students do not have teaching materials and student supplies at home – the activities and resources shared in this PD do not require the teacher to re-create the wheel and/or purchase new materials. Educators will learn how the staff at the Education Center has been providing engaging hands-on multisensory literacy instruction in their virtual classrooms, including each component of a Structured Literacy lesson.

M’s of Math: Metacognition, Morphology, and Mastery
Reading instruction shouldn’t end when the period ends, especially for our dyslexic students who struggle to develop decoding and comprehension skills that are required in all content areas. During this session, participants will learn how to apply the science of reading to their math instruction in order to take advantage of the opportunities that math instruction offers to teach reading. In real life, math isn’t a worksheet full of equations, it involves language proficiency predicated on reading and vocabulary skills. While some dyslexic students have an affinity for math, especially on the conceptual level, some struggle with the language of math and often end up developing anxiety rather than developing confidence. Participants will learn how to bridge their reading instruction into math class by providing targeted fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction that involves the language of math. The session will begin with an overview of math screeners such as Acadience Math Screener in order to learn how to measure students’ acquisition of foundational math skills. Participants will leave the workshop with strategies and resources they can immediately incorporate into their math lessons with their dyslexic students.
Wilson Language Training®
Wilson Fundations®
Wilson Fundations® is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. Fundations is based upon the Wilson Reading System® principles and serves as a prevention and intervention program to reduce reading and spelling failure. The second edition was published in 2012, with important changes to the scope/sequence of concepts in Level K and Level 1. A new, friendlier teacher manual was also introduced with the second edition!
Wilson Just Words®
Just Words® is an explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling program for students in grades 4–12 and adults who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention. The program is designed for students with below-average decoding and spelling scores and should be combined with other literature-rich programs.
Just Words aligns with a school or district’s Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) or Response to Intervention (RTI) framework of instruction by delivering a Tier 2 intervention addressing a sophisticated study of word structure with explicit teaching of “how English works” for both decoding and spelling automaticity. It is designed for students who can benefit from the targeted word study focus without requiring the more comprehensive intervention of Wilson Reading System®. This is a 1-day workshop for both virtual and in-person offerings.
Wilson Reading System® Introductory Course
This course provides participants with an overview of Wilson Reading System® , now in its 4th edition, and is the required prerequisite for Wilson Reading System Level I Certification. The program is implemented in a 1:1 setting, small groups and/or reading classes in the general classroom, after-school/volunteer programs, literacy, and adult settings.
