This program teaches 3rd through 8th-grade students how to use metacognitive strategies to improve their comprehension of expository and narrative texts.  Strong metacognitive skills are necessary for close reading. This program has been successfully used with high school students identified as needing intensive comprehension instruction. Students will learn how to become active readers and improve their writing skills at the same time. A reading fluency component is included in the program as well.

New research from the Neuhaus Education Center, the creators of Developing Metacognitive Skills (DMS), has shown 20% – 40% increases in vocabulary and comprehension skills when the program was implemented 5 days a week for 5 weeks with third-grade students.  Participants will receive a Developing Metacognitive Skills manual, Word Detective manual, Six-Way Paragraphs (Middle Level); and classroom webs.
